Welcome to the 3rd oldest TOOL LIBRARY in the United States - we started up in 1978!
Need a drill for a day? A saw for a weekend? Hard hat for a week? Torque wrenches guns to torx bits, we can help. Our Tool Library has nearly 2100 tools to share with our association members. We also provide short safety-oriented trainings as needed, and free DIY advice, time permitting. You can view our inventory HERE.
Our Tool Library is open
Mondays 5-7 pm, Fridays 3-5pm, & Saturdays 9am to 1pm!
We are OPEN on Labor Day, Monday 9/2/2024 5-7 PM
Our Tool Library is a community-oriented program that seeks to get tools into people's hands so they can improve their lives and surroundings.
The Tool Library is available to all current members of the Phinney Neighborhood Association. Sign up/renew online now!
Items can be checked out for one week at a time starting at $2 for most hand tools. Power tools, in-demand tools and high maintenance tools, cost a bit more, but our loan fees are waaay below standard rental rates. Tools can usually be reserved and renewed depending on demand.
Our inventory can be browsed online, and we work very diligently to make sure our inventory is up to date.
CIDER PRESS: We are now accepting reservations for the 2024 fall pressing season. Your reservation must be paid in advance ($50) in person at the Tool Library. We had a very successful 2023 campaign - we were able to move the press directly from user to user, and we want to build on that & establish a “cider press community".
CORDLESS: We are growing our selection of cordless tools. Our current cordless inventory includes many drills, impact drivers, right angle drills, worklights, circular saws, sawzalls, a jigsaw, a router, a chainsaw, a couple of weedwackers, a hedge trimmer, and a pole chainsaw.
COMMUNITY WOODSHOP: Did you know that there's a (fairly) new Community Woodshop at the other end of our building?
Check out their webpage for info on how to sign up for a training and use the shop.
CUTTING SERVICE: If you just need some molding or shelf boards cut, the Tool Library is now set up with a dedicated miter saw. Bring your cuts by…if we have enough staff, we'll do it on the spot, and even teach you how.
We accept monetary Donations! The amounts suggested per tool are waaay below what you’d pay to rent commercially, and help us keep the library up and running for our community. Bring in your donation (credit cards accepted) when you return your tool.

Donate Tools
As of May 2023, we'd love to get:
One of those dryer vent cleaner air hoses
Rototillers
“Crocodile” chain saw lopper
Ryobi, DeWalt, & Makita cordless tools, batteries, & chargers (18 volt)
Due to space limitations, we can only accept most hand tools in brand new unused condition!
We don't deal with gas-powered equipment AT ALL.
Thank you for understanding that we can't accept all tools – our space is limited and we already have multiples of some tools.
To donate tools, please bring them to the Tool Library during open hours. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity or space to accept all tools, nor the resources to dispose of them, if necessary. Please don't leave boxes of “tool detritus” for us to sort through. Thank you for your support.

Location
The location of the library is 6615 Dayton Ave N. (corner of Dayton and 66th, the southeast corner of the Brick Building) – you can park in the driveway loading spots right outside the Tool Library, on the street on Dayton, or in the Phinney Center Lower Lot and go down the south side stairs.
Other TOOL LIBRARIES around Seattle
We admire our other local tool libraries, but each one operates independently, and marches to its own drummer.
In other words, membership in one does not confer privileges to other libraries.
